Plug-in solar kits, checked against the official register before we recommend one.

A plug-in solar device has to be on the ENA register before it can legally be sold. We only review a kit we've found there ourselves, and we tell you plainly when we haven't found one yet. Tell us what you're looking at and we'll check it for you.

Tell us the kit you're looking at

Name, email, and the kit's name or a link to the listing. We check it against the register and the specification and reply with what we found.

We reply by email. Sellers don't see your message and we don't sell your details.

The register is the test, and we apply it before you buy

The register is a public list, not a marketing claim. We read it ourselves before we write a word about a kit.

Before a manufacturer can sell one of these, the device has to be type tested against Engineering Recommendation G98 and placed on the ENA Type Test Register, a list the Energy Networks Association runs and anyone can search. Each entry is marked Compliant or Non-compliant, and a non-compliant device stays on the list rather than being taken down. The register covers thousands of devices of every kind, and plug-in solar is one of the types it holds.

We search it by manufacturer and model, and we read the Compliance Status column for ourselves. Search the register yourself. Mind the hyphen in the address: the version without it will not load.

The specification allows up to four panels on one inverter. We have not checked a kit with more than one panel against the register yet. Send us the listing and we will.

Two device types from the specification are still unmatched with a register entry we have read ourselves. Vendor pages claim between 40 and 52 approved kits. We have not verified any of those figures, so we do not repeat them.

Deals, only on kits that pass

We do not have a UK price we would stand behind. The government's own assessment quotes a European range for an 800 watt system, not a British shelf price, and prices move faster than a page like this can keep up with.

When a kit we have checked has a genuine UK price attached to it, we will list it here with the date we checked it. Until then there is nothing to list, so we are not going to invent something to fill the space. Ask us to let you know when that changes.

What to look for before you buy

Eight things to check on any listing, each one taken from the product specification, and none of them is the price.

What the inverter puts into the mains

Ask for the rated output. A compliant device puts no more than 800 VA into the mains, at no more than 3.5 amps.

The plug, already fitted

Look for a moulded plug to the BS 1363 series with a BS 1362 fuse link, already on the device.

The warning about adaptors

Extension cables, multi-way adaptors, RCD adaptors and travel adaptors are all ruled out, and the instructions have to say so.

Whether there is a battery in the box

Plug-in battery systems, and solar devices with storage built in, are outside what has been approved.

If you are thinking about a balcony

Balcony kits and the planning rule that leaves timber balconies out

27 August 2026 changed two things at once. The rules on selling and using these devices took effect, and alongside them the planning right most installations depend on was rewritten. Houses and blocks of flats both lost cover for a panel fixed to a wooden wall, a balcony, or timber cladding.

There is a year's grace before the old version stops counting: either set of rules can be followed up to 27 August 2027.

Almost every listing calls these balcony kits. If your balcony, or the wall behind it, is timber, this permitted development right does not cover it, and a planning application usually costs more than the kit.

Questions buyers ask

Why do you only list one kit?

Because it is the only one we have found on the register and checked ourselves. Vendor pages count anywhere from 40 to 52 approved kits, and we cannot verify any of those numbers, so we do not repeat them.

Why can't I see a price anywhere on this site?

We do not have a UK figure we trust. The government's own assessment gives a European range, not a British shelf price, so we are not putting a number on the page.

What about a balcony?

Only if the balcony, or the wall behind it, is not timber. That is what the rewrite on 27 August 2026 ruled out. Send us what yours is made of and we will tell you where you stand.
